5G Samsung Galaxy S10 essentially confirmed to launch on Verizon in H1 2019

One of the big things we will be seeing in 2019 is 5G smartphones. Verizon and Motorola announced a 5G Moto Mod, AT& is making plans for exclusives, OnePlus is slated to have a 5G phone, and, of course, the big one is the Samsung Galaxy S10. The Galaxy S10 model being referred to as “Special Edition” is rumored to have 5G support, and today Verizon and Samsung essentially confirmed it will be coming next year.

The title of the joint press release is pretty straightforward: “Verizon and Samsung to release 5G smartphone in the U.S. in first half of 2019.” The Galaxy S10 is not mentioned by name in the press release, but it does say the device will be “powered by the upcoming flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon Mobile Platform with the Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem.” That rules out the possibility of a re-released current Samsung device such as the Galaxy S9 or Galaxy Note 9.

Samsung and Verizon will be showing off a proof-of-concept device using the aforementioned Qualcomm modem. The non-Verizon international version of this device will likely use Samsung’s own Exynos 5100 5G modem. The Special Edition Galaxy S10 with 5G is also rumored to have 6 total cameras (4 on the back, 2 in front) and a larger 6.7-inch display. There will be 3 other Galaxy S10 models with smaller displays. Those will launch earlier in the year while the 5G model isn’t expected until later in the Spring.

5G is a very new technology and it won’t be available everywhere overnight just because a few phones support it. We still have a way to go before 5G has the same type of reliable coverage that we have with 4G LTE.
